Islands, Archipelagos or Continents? An Analysis of the Geography of the Federal Supreme Court
CONCLUDED
This study investigates the dissent patterns among the justices of the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court using machine learning techniques and natural language processing, combined with data science analysis. This research introduces a novel focus: it explores the implicit decision-making patterns in the voting scores related to Habeas Corpus petitions judged by the Court's plenary, comparing these with the decisions made in Direct Actions of Unconstitutionality between 2011 and 2022. The investigations were segmented into four temporal sections, aiming to identify patterns and ideological, legal, or strategic groupings among the analyzed justices, using the main rulings from both classes of legal proceedings as the data source. The conclusions of the study confirmed the hypothesis that the Court exhibits similar dissent patterns even in very distinct procedural classes. This finding offers a unique insight into the decision-making dynamics of the highest court in Brazil, with implications for understanding judicial behavior and processes.
